What a Puppy Really Costs in the UK (2026)
Purchase price, setup, food, insurance, vet care and the surprise expenses almost nobody budgets for. Honest numbers, no scare tactics.
The advert says £1,200. That number is the smallest part of what you’re signing up for, and the gap between it and the real figure is where most financial stress with a first dog comes from.
These are ballpark UK figures for 2026. They vary a lot by breed, size and region — a small dog in the north-east and a giant breed in London are almost different hobbies — so treat them as a starting frame rather than a quote.
Year one
The purchase
- From a breeder: £800–£3,000+, depending heavily on breed and whether health testing has been done properly.
- From a rescue: £150–£350 adoption fee, usually including neutering, microchipping and initial vaccinations.
Setup
- Essential kit: £220–£420 (crate, pen, bowls, harness, lead, bedding, toys, cleaner).
- Initial vaccination course: £60–£100.
- Microchipping: £15–£25 if not already done.
- Neutering: £150–£450, usually later in year one or two.
- Puppy classes: £60–£120 for a course.
Running costs, year one
- Food: £20–£70 a month depending on size and quality.
- Insurance: £20–£45 a month for a puppy on a lifetime policy.
- Flea, tick and worming: £10–£20 a month.
- Annual booster and health check: £50–£90.
Realistic year-one total, excluding the purchase price: roughly £1,100 to £2,300. Add the purchase and most first-time owners spend somewhere between £2,000 and £4,500 in the first twelve months.
Every year after that
Ongoing costs settle down once the setup and puppy-specific bills are behind you. Budget roughly £900 to £2,000 a year for food, insurance, parasite treatment, boosters and routine care — nearer the top of that range for large breeds, long coats or anything needing professional grooming every six weeks.
Over a typical twelve-to-fourteen year life, that’s somewhere between £12,000 and £28,000. It’s worth knowing that number before you commit, not after.
The costs people forget
- Grooming. A doodle or poodle cross needs a professional groom every six to eight weeks at £45–£80 a time. That’s £350–£650 a year, and it is not optional.
- Holiday cover. Boarding kennels run £25–£45 a night; a home sitter more. A fortnight away is a few hundred pounds.
- Daycare or a dog walker. If you work outside the home, £12–£20 per walk or £25–£40 a day.
- Damage. A chewed sofa arm, a destroyed door frame, one pair of glasses. Budget a few hundred pounds for year one and hope you don’t need it.
- The excess. Insurance rarely pays everything. Expect a £100–£200 excess per condition per year, plus a percentage co-payment on older dogs.
- The emergency. This is the big one. A swallowed sock needing surgery, a cruciate ligament repair, a night at an out-of-hours clinic — £1,500 to £4,000 is entirely ordinary.
The only financial test that matters
Forget the monthly average for a moment. Ask this instead:
If your dog needed £2,000 of emergency treatment next Tuesday, could you say yes without hesitating?
Either through savings, insurance you’ve actually read, or credit you’re comfortable using. If the honest answer is no, that isn’t a reason never to get a dog. It’s a reason to spend six months building the buffer first — and the puppy will still be available, just from a different litter.
Where the wider numbers come from: the PDSA’s annual Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report tracks what UK owners actually spend on their pets and is the closest thing we have to a national picture, rather than one vet’s price list. For the costs that are legally unavoidable rather than discretionary, GOV.UK’s microchipping requirements are the place to start.
